[section_title title=”Overclocking”]Overclocking

Overclocking with AMD cards has been a rollercoaster of late due to clear restrictions placed on cards over the past year or so; especially with so many being voltage locked.  That isn’t the case however with the Club3D R9 280 royalKing graphics card which should allow for some pretty interesting results.  With that being said, my chosen overclocking program today is none other than the MSI Afterburner utility which does allow you to unlock the voltage through the settings; not recommended unless you know exactly what you are doing.

So onto the actual overclocking of the R9 280, there wasn’t much to be had, although I did manage to achieve a stable overclock of 1180/1475MHz which is effectively an overclock of just under 23%; not exactly small when all things are considered.  Overclocking on the AMD R7/R9 range is similar to overclocking the 79xx series as effectively, they are the exact same cards which makes it relatively easy to get to grips with.  To achieve 1180/1475MHz, I did have to up the voltage to 1.25v (maximum is 1.3v without effecting limitations) which isn’t exactly small but is definitely manageable with the included CoolStream Club3D cooler.

Overall I am more than happy with the overclocking performance of this particular R9 280 and as mentioned, an overclock of around 23% isn’t a bad result at all, in fact I feel it is particularly good and I settled with this overclock as the best I could achieve; anything more would give artifacts/crashing, even with increased voltage.
